SR High School Principal Speaks to Kiwanis Club:

Scrips Ranch High School Principal, Dr. Matt Lawson, spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Scripps Ranch during their March 4th meeting. Matt has been with the high school for the past 10 years. Five years as vice principal and the last 5 years as principal. Dr. Lawson discussed issues facing the high school that range from dealing with our students mental health to managing an ever decreasing budget. Despite the very real challenges he is faced with, Dr. Lawson has managed to raise the school to #2 ranking in the San Diego Unified School district and 6th overall in San Diego County. The Kiwanis Club of Scripps Ranch posed the question to Dr Lawson on what could the club do to help the school. Interestingly, the response was not more money, it was to provide students with opportunities to gain real world experiences by offering them internships at our places of work. Anyone that can help place students with work experience where they work should reach out directly to Dr. Lawson via e-mail: [email protected]

Bev and Mike Cassity, SR Farmers Market & Family Festival

Beverly and Mike Cassity have run the Scripps Ranch Farmers Market & Family Festival since 2001. They started the market at the old Ellen Browning Scripps Elementry school location across the street from Sammy’s Wood Fried Pizza. They operated there for 17 years until the school moved to its current location and the developer for the Livia Apartments started construction on the site in 2018. Without a location, Bev and Mike were forced into retirement until Newtopia Cyder owners Rick Moreno and Jennifer Hays Moreno convinced them to come back into running the market at their location at 10045 Carroll Canyon Rd. The market runs every Thursday from 3:30PM to 7:30PM. Although many of the farmers that supported the market with fresh grown produce have moved on to other locations, Bev and Mike have reinvented the market to include many food vendors that offer fantastic culinary experiences that range from authentic street tacos to gourmet french bakery items. They have also worked to pull in more vendors and activities to cater to the children of our community. If you haven’t been to the market at its new location, please check it out and support this fun community experience and support our local businesses. If you have questions about the market, Bev & Mike can be reached at (858) 603-3178 or emailed at [email protected]
